Gullfoss
Show webcamWatch the Gullfoss waterfall online with a webcam, which is located in the southwestern part of the island and is one of the most famous and most visited tourist attractions in Iceland.
Gullfoss is a double waterfall, meaning that the water first cascades over the lower waterfall and then drops dramatically down into the mighty valley through the tall main waterfall. Water is brought to Gullfoss by the river Hvítá, which originates from the Langjökull glacier. The total height drop of the waterfall is 32 meters, which may not be as big as some other waterfalls in the world, but its size and beauty more than match its height.
Gullfoss is not only stunning in its power, but also in its incredible beauty. The water that falls from the cliff into the darkness of the deep canyon creates huge clouds of spray and rainbows that create a magical atmosphere. In the winter months, the waterfall is surrounded by ice formations and a snowy landscape, making Gullfoss an even more impressive sight.
The history of the Gullfoss waterfall dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, when it began to appear on the tourist map of Iceland. Thanks to the courage and determination of an Icelandic woman named Sigríður Tómasdóttir, who fought against plans to use the waterfall for electricity generation, it was saved for future generations.
