Halifax is the capital of the province of Nova Scotia in Canada, located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. The history of Halifax dates back to 1749, when the city was founded as a military fortress by the British Crown.
The city played an important role during the American War of Independence, as well as during the First and Second World Wars, serving as a key military base. In 1917, tragedy struck Halifax when a munitions explosion occurred, causing one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history.
Halifax Harbor is one of the largest and deepest harbors in the world. There is also a military base and the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, which commemorates the city's rich maritime history.
