The Western Wall is part of the Old City of Jerusalem and was built around 19 BC by King Herod the Great as part of the Second Temple expansion. This wall is particularly significant to the Jewish people, which is why the Western Wall was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1981. UNESCO describes it as "a religious and cultural symbol of Jewish identity and the spiritual connection of humanity."
Jerusalem, the capital of Israel, is located in the Judean Mountains on the border between Israel and Palestine. With a history that dates back to the 4th millennium BC Jerusalem is one of the oldest cities in the world. In addition to Israel, Palestine also considers Jerusalem to be its capital.
Jerusalem is the meeting place of three major monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
Judaism associates Jerusalem with King David, who chose the city as his main residence, and his son Solomon, who built the First Temple there. This sanctuary was later destroyed by Babylon, but the Jews later rebuilt Jerusalem and built the Second Temple.
In Christian tradition, Jerusalem is associated with many important events in the life of Jesus Christ, including his crucifixion and resurrection. Christians still gather in Jerusalem to visit the sites associated with these events.
For Islam, Jerusalem is the third holiest place after Mecca and Medina. The place where the prophet Muhammad is said to have ascended to heaven is today called Al-Aqsa.
