At the western end of the Old City of Jerusalem is a monumental structure known as Wilson's Arch. Wilson's Arch is located in a strategic location with a wonderful view of the city. It lies on the road that leads from the Jaffa Gate, one of the entrance gates to the Old City, towards Zion.
Wilson's Arch was built in the 19th century, specifically in 1864-1867, during Ottoman rule. This area of Jerusalem was then under the administration of the Ottoman Empire. It was named after the British Consul General in Jerusalem, Charles Wilson, who sought to identify historical and archaeological interest in the area.
Wilson's Arch is a stone arch that served as one of the building elements of the water system that supplied water to the fortress district of Jerusalem. This structure was part of a project to ensure sufficient water for the needs of residents in the area.
