On the southern coast of Iceland, not far from the village of Vík í Mýrdal, lies one of the most interesting and at the same time mysterious glaciers in this glacial country - Mýrdalsjökull. This huge glacier lies on the Katla volcano, which has a bad name for its eruptions.
Mýrdalsjökull is the second largest glacier in Iceland and covers the entire Katla volcano, which is roughly 600 square kilometers of ice and snow. The glacier has several beautiful ice tongues and promontories that reach into the sea, and this brings wonderful views of glacial rivers and lakes.
Katla is one of the most active volcanoes in Iceland.
