In the square is the Kilómetro Cero point, from where the distances of all the main roads in Spain are measured. This symbolic point is marked by a plaque on the ground in front of the Real Casa de Correos building. In the middle of the square stands the equestrian statue of King Charles III, who is considered one of the most important monarchs in the history of Spain.
One of the most prominent symbols of this square is the famous Tío Pepe neon sign. Tío Pepe is a brand of Spanish sherry produced by the González Byass winery. The Tío Pepe neon sign, which depicts a figure in a traditional Andalusian jacket with a hat and a bottle of sherry, was first installed in Puerta del Sol in 1935. The sign quickly became an icon of Madrid and one of the most recognizable advertising signs in the city.
