Jihlava is one of the most historically valuable cities in the Czech Republic. Historically, it is a Moravian city and even today most of Jihlava lies on the Moravian side. Today's Jihlava is a modern center of the Vysočina region located in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands on the former Czech-Moravian border. It has been a statutory city since 2000.
The city was founded in the 13th century as a mining town with silver mining. Together with Kutná Hora, it bore the proud title of silver treasury of the Czech kingdom. The number of historical monuments and the very core of the city was the reason for the declaration of the city monument reserve in 1982. Worth seeing is a large square, a historic center with a checkerboard net and an extremely intricate labyrinth of underground corridors, famous especially for the phosphorescent corridor. The underground with a total length of 25 km was created by interconnecting medieval cellars. It is the second largest underground labyrinth in the Czech Republic.
The historic center of Jihlava is one of the largest in the country. In the corner of Masaryk Square you can visit the Vysočina Museum, which is the second largest in Moravia. The museum's expositions are located in three architecturally valuable houses on the square.
Lovers of cycling will appreciate the bike path leading all the way to Austria. It is about 110 km from Jihlava to the town of Raab nad Dyjí and about a third of the route consists of safe sections, intended only for cyclists, in-line skaters and pedestrians. The large Aquapark Water Paradise in Jihlava offers an outdoor and indoor part with many attractions for children and adults, as well as wellness and sports facilities. Wildlife as in the wild - Jihlava Zoo, where visitors will see about two hundred exotic species of animals. There are also monkeys, felines, reptiles and giraffes.
