Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, is a fascinating city full of rich history, picturesque architecture and a lively atmosphere. This stunning city is situated at the crossroads of Central Europe and the South-Eastern Balkans, giving it a unique and diverse cultural identity.
Zagreb has a long and rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. The city was created by the union of two medieval settlements - the Upper Town (Gornji Grad) and the Lower Town (Donji Grad). The first written mention of Zagreb dates from 1094, when Horní Město was mentioned as the seat of the Croatian king Petar Svačić. Over the centuries, the city has undergone many changes, including periods of rule by the Habsburg Monarchy and the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
Zagreb is home to many historical monuments that testify to its rich history and architectural heritage. The Upper Town is crowned by the imposing St. Stephen's Cathedral, the largest Catholic cathedral in Croatia. Near it we can also find Kamenita vrata, a stone gate from the 13th century, which is one of the most important symbols of the city.
Dolní Město is the center of city life, where you can find the National Theatre, modern shopping areas, cafes and restaurants. Ban Jelačić Square, the central square of the city, is a popular place for meeting, shopping and celebrating.
Other interesting monuments are, for example, the Kameniti stol, a medieval stone with inscriptions in the Lower Town, or the Jesuit Church of the Holy Cross, which surprises with its baroque interior.
