The town of Klatovy, one of the gates of Šumava, is located in the Pilsen region. Klatovy boasts many historical monuments and traditions of carnation growing. Typical for the city are two towers - Black and White. The black tower from the 16th century used to protect the city, today it serves as an observation deck with a gallery on the fifth floor, to which 226 steps lead. From the Black Tower there is a wonderful view of the Šumava forests. The tower measures 81 meters and is definitely worth a visit. When you enjoy the view from the tower, head to the exhibition at the Baroque pharmacy U Bílého jednorožce or underground to the Klatovy catacombs with mummies under the Baroque Jesuit Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary and St. Ignatius. The catacombs were built as a burial ground for members of the order, its supporters and important burghers. The remains of the dead were mummified and overall this place evokes a feeling of sacred reverence. Other sights of the city include the town hall and the Jewish cemetery with a synagogue. The protection of medieval Klatovy was ensured by double stone walls.
