For the development of Ostrava, the breakthrough was the discovery of coal in the second half of the 18th century, which was later followed by the development of ironworks. Today, Ostrava has long since lost the face of a typically industrial city, coal mining finally ended in 1994 and mining museums were established on the site of the original mines. The city's industrial heritage is an exceptional architectural gem.

For example, after the revitalization, the former gas tank has become a multifunctional cultural center Gong, where educational and social events, congresses or exhibitions take place.
The oldest preserved monument of Ostrava is the Silesian-Ostrava Castle, which was founded by the Piasts as a border fortress. Over the centuries, the castle "fell" by 16 m lower due to the mining of coal seams, however, today it is presented to you restored in its original beauty and is the only preserved of the three local castles. There is a museum of witches and an exhibition of the law of suffering, a lookout tower and a castle gallery.
