The spa town of Podebrady is located in the Elbe lowlands on the river Elbe. It is the largest Central Bohemian spa with a modern colonnade, a number of parks and springs. In 2008, Podebrady celebrated 100 years since the beginning of the first spa season. Since 1908, heart disease, diabetes or musculoskeletal disorders have been treated here. In addition to spa treatments, Lázně Poděbrady also offers wellness and weekend or senior stays in five hotels. Up to 25,000 guests visit the spa every year.
The dominant feature of the town is the chateau, where, according to some historians, the Czech King George of Poděbrady was born, after whom the town bears its name. George of Poděbrady is reminiscent of the main square - King George of Pděbrady Square and the exposition of the Elbe Museum with the King George Memorial in the local castle. Already in the 17th century, small spas were established in Poděbrady, but the most important year for the modern history of the town was the year 1905, when a spring of mineral water with excellent healing effects was discovered.
You can walk around the city alone or with a guide or use the sightseeing train. In the Elbe Museum, a model of the first automatic bottle filling machine, in which the famous mineral water Poděbradka is bottled, is on display. It is interesting to compare the tastes of natural and prepared Poděbradka - just have a cup with you and go to the individual springs. Children in the city will certainly be interested in the Children's Astronomical Clock at the entrance to the colonnade from King George's Square.
On hot summer days, you can take the opportunity to swim in Poděbrady Lake, or go on a trip on a cycling and in-line trail to Nymburk. The road in the opposite direction leads to the fortified settlement in Libice nad Cidlinou, known from history for the murder of the Slavníkovec family.
